I just got back from the nearest Softbank store and they told me that they will only sell iPhones to new customers, and that existing customers will have to wait until the 2nd or 3rd shipment of iPhones to upgrade.

Have any existing Softbank customers been able to get an iPhone?

They told me it depends on whether or not you're 'out of contract' or still paying for an existing handset. If you're still paying off an existing handset you'd have to pay of off the rest of the contract term to get an iPhone. I myself have been out of contract since Feb 2008 so would have had no problem getting one.

Im fine paying for my old phone (and selling in yahoo auctions)... But the store near me said they wouldn't sell the iPhone to ANY existing customers, I was wondering if this is really policy or just BS that the manager was spewing in order to up his new sign-up quota

Its definitely just BS - Softbank Roppongi told me on at least 2 occasions that I wouldn't have a problem unless I was still paying off my existing handset.
