I have an MKV file with various softsubs built in - but what do I have to do to get these hardsubbed into an MP4? I know they have to be re-encoded, which I tried. I demuxed the video and subs, muxed them back together into an MP4 and then tried to convert it in Visualhub - which didn't work, cus I just ended up with a converted MP4 with no subs.

Any tips?

VisualHub advance settings>force quicktime decoding

I did this for an AVI + subs > MP4

Suppose to work for MKV too

Here is a link for instructions on the Visualhub Forum

Good Luck

Thanks for this info. I never tried this way...think I'll give it a shot.

I usually open MKV with QT with Perian installed and save as "Self Contained Movie". The subs wll be hard coded in the *.mov file. I then would use VishualHub to convert MKV to MP4 to play on AppleTV.

QT decoding

Using QT decoding in VH with Perian installed should get your subs. But it will take approximately ten times longer to transcode...

Therefore, I first encode it without subs, then add subs in Submerge, which takes a minute or two.
