software needed to create website logo from jpeg

what is best software to create usable web logo from a jpeg file? the logo is designed but it is in jpeg format and I put it in website I can't get rid of the background behind logo so that the web page color will be the logo background.

Gimp (free), Pixelmator (Mac App Store) or Photoshp (30 day fully functioning trial).
Best save as .png after you successfully masked what you wanted, as .png files store transparencies.
