Hey All

Just wondering if there is a progra mthat will examine a movie file and tell you which codecs are needed to play it. I've got a bunch of movie files that I ripped on my old PC but most of them don't work on my mac

Cheers for you help!

Then if the movies play in VLC, just press command-i and see which audio and video codec they use.
Then search for and install a QuickTime Plugin for the actual codec

Got the A52 codec but it still doesn't play with sound.

Actually, I played a few movies in VLC and they were very stuttery, but they played fine in QT [obviously without sound!]

Read this thread for codec help.
Once you've got all your QT codecs sorted, try Cellulo. It will play anything that QT can, but will also allow you to use mplayer as a plug-in, in instances where QT still can't cope.

Cheers for that, they are all xvids.

Got them to play in QT, but they have no sound!

The codec is A52 according to VLC, I'll have a dig around....

Since your question pertains to the intel machine and QT (you might or might not have tried these steps):

Download the latest QT DivX codec for intel mac here:

http://labs.divx.com/LatestMacCodec

Note: In order for Front Row to load the latest and greatest DivX component, you must first log out and then log back in again. If you don’t do this, Front Row might crash.

That should resolve alot of your issues. If not, read on:

Download the QT XviD beta codec here:

http://n.ethz.ch/student/naegelic/download/XviD_Avi_Import_Preview3_intel.dmg

Third, check out the experimental AC3 audio for intel here - test at your own risk:

http://web.mac.com/kaicherry/iWeb/TheCabaal/Dark Ten/8F6C946F-54D4-45D7-8BDD-0D3B2D8B385C.html

Those should assist you in getting your QT Player to run native and play those pesky video files.

Lastly, if you are experiencing stuttering in VLC, make sure you have the latest nightly build of VLC for intel mac:

http://nightlies.videolan.org/build/macosx-intel/

That stuttering might be a result of your using either an older intel build of VLC, or otherwise a PPC version that is chocking your system while running under Rosetta.

Cheers for that!!

Followed the steps and they worked a treat, it was the univ. version of the AC3 that did the trick. Thanks again!

New problem....when I try and watch a movie in FR, it says that I don't have any movies, and I should put them in the movies folder in my home directory. Well, all my movies are on an external drive, but I've created an alias and put the alias [named 'movies'] into home/movies, but I get nuthin' in FR.

Any tips???

Cheers again guys!
