I've got a Macbook Pro (mid 2012), it currently has High Sierra 10.13.6. Is there no way to update to newer software? When I click on the "Software Update" tag, I get the message "no further updates" (or something similar). Are there any other options?

You should be able to run 10.15.7 on a Mid 2012 fully supported by Apple. Big Sur will run well with a patcher. If it we me I would use gibMacos and grab a Catalina or Mojave installer to update.

Has the internal drive been changed to an SSD? I'm not sure upgrading macOS is a good idea if it's still a mechanical, spinner hard drive.

Also, how much RAM is in it?
