Software Update: Bug or "Feature"?

While Software Update is looking for new s/w or d/ling it doesn't want to work in the background like it did in previous versions. Even as I type this it keeps popping up to the front to show me it's d/l Java.

It there a way to stop this obnoxiousness? I don't see anything in preferences. Or is this bug that needs squashing?

Is it a program saying you need Java installed, such as Adobe Photoshop or the actual software update program? It should act like any other window.

Yeah, it's the Apple S/U program, not 3rd party.
