I recently reinstalled my system OS due to many previous troubles, and the first time I decided to run Software Update, everything worked fine. Now, every time I try it, it fails!

Crashed Thread: 0 Dispatch queue: com.apple.main-thread

I cut out the "Thread #" bits because, unless you speak fluent computer, it's not helpful. Nor would it fit in the 2000 character limit.

Can anybody tell me what's wrong and what to do please?

Thanks

Please post the backtrace for Thread 0 (the one that crashed). Don't need the rest of the crash report yet.

Right, I'm just restarting the software update now.
If it fails again, I'll give you the Thread 0, if it works then problem solved!

Please open Console (in Utilities) and go to File->Open Quickly->Diagnostic and Usage Information->User Diagnostic Reports and choose a recent Software Update crash report. Post the start of the Binary Images section---as much as you can.

Will this do?

That looks like it's from an iMovie crash report. You need to find a Software Update crash report.

It was a software update covering a few things. I just picked iMovie for now, because that's what I most needed, and at first I thought I may work if I only asked it to do that.

It's still done through Software Update and it's failing. Miserably.

OK, I'm getting confused. You tried to update iMovie using Software Update and Software Update crashed? Or Software Update worked and then iMovie crashed? Can't you get the latest iMovie update directly from here, without using Software Update?

At the time of fetching you the thread code, I had chosen to download JUST the iMovie update, to save the stress of downloading multiple updates simultaneously. But, Software Update will not download ANY of the updates, and each time comes up with the message; "Software Update quit unexpectedly".

I really need to know if this can be fixed with help from you guys, or if I should just add this to the list of problems, and use the errors to show an apple genius. Bearing in mind that it is very difficult for me to get to an apple store.

Customer care won't help me because the phone help thing has expired, but I'm still under warranty for a replacement...

OK, so it was Software Update that crashed, not iMovie. In order to try and discover why, it would be helpful to see the Binary Images section of a recent crash report for Software Update, not for iMovie or anything else you tried to update.
