Hey

Ok I'm doing this from my touch so there maybe spelling and typos along the way.

Anway, I ran software update this morning and began downloading, all went well then it asked to Restart. So I did.
Now its sitting at the leopard space wallpaper with the circle spinning. It's been like this now for 45min and the screen has now dimmed and I can't move the mouse.

What should I do? Hold the power button?

If it's still like that now, there's not a lot else you can do. You will likely corrupt your OS install by doing so, but an archive & install (with preserve user & network settings on) will get you back up and running again. It's annoying, but it's the only option I can think of. When you've only got one button...
