Software update Greyed out

Hi all...

Sometimes when I start my MBP, and go to "About this Mac", I see this :-

After a period, the Software Update button is clickable, but it sometimes only appears 'greyed-out' when Mac is restarted, and doesn't happen all the time.

Also, doesn't happen when disconnected.

Is Apple doing some sort of Apple update check 'behind-the-scenes' ?

works fine. When going to Software Update in About, the Apps Store opens as usual.
