For some bizarre reason the icon for Software Update on System Preferences has changed from the usual Mac ball with two arrows to a light switch, which doesn't look like it belongs there. Any thoughts on why this has happened and how it can be changed back if need be?

The same!

Hey! have you found anything about it? It just happened to me after installing a bunch of soft!

Drag com.apple.systempreferences.plist from the Preferences folder onto your desktop. If that works, delete the file you just dragged to your desktop.

All done.

Actually, I've since learnt that dragging com.apple.preferencepanes.cache from the Cache folder on your Home folder's Library to the Desktop whilst System Preferences is closed should help. This is a cache file so its removal should do no harm to your system. :)
