I am running into a problem with Monterey 12.4. It's a mobile user with admin rights. I am trying to update it to 12.51. However, the software update is asking for password but it doesn't accept it at all even though the password is correct. It just shakes and does nothing.

I did google search about this but I can't find a solution to this at all. The last hope is to wipe the machine and start over, but I am afraid of the same issue re-occuring.

Thanks

I think you should be ok. If you wipe the machine completely, even with Activation Lock enabled, you should be able to get passed this window.

I don't recognise that screen. It doesn't look how I would expect the password screen to look.
I haven't got it in front of me and I know this isn't exactly the same- taken off the net- but it should look something more like this.
Maybe someone else can jump in that can test it? But that looks like something else- another program or something?

Dude, OP is trying to update their computer. In recent versions of macOS, the user has to authenticate themselves in order for the OS to get updated. Without the authentication, the OS won't ever update.

Your screenshot is from a totally different context. It isn't related at all to what the OP is trying to do.

I get that sometimes on my M1, OP. Try canceling it and try again. Is there a different path to software update via the App Store app in the dock?
