Can anyone please tell me what extension the files that get sent by Apple during a software update have?

At the moment I am unable to run the update application via our school network, presumably because of the filter being applied to certain downloads like .dmg

Asked on the Apple discussion boards but got no answer. Perhaps someone here will know. :)

For a local Software update server, the Apple servers send .tar files containing the update, plus .dist files in various languages for the installer. Inside each tarball is a signature and yet another tarball which contains a normal .pkg bundle.
