I've always updated my Mac software when alerted by Software Update. I installed the latest update on Saturday, and the update got to "registering updated components" and then seemed to fail (i.e. it would never finish). I force quit the update and restarted the MacBook Pro to see what happened.

Everything seemed OK - applications were working normally, etc. But when I tried to shut down, I got a light gray screen and the computer would not turn off without pressing the power button. Same thing if I attempted a restart.

I read online and learned that it may be better to download the updates from Apple and install manually rather than using the Software Updates prompt to install. I tried that (after reinstalling Lion), and the updates installed and "finished" without a force quit. I thought my problem was solved, but no - the computer fails to restart/shut down without intervention of pressing the power button.

What I did discover, however, is that if I log off my main user account, I can shut down/restart without any problem.

So...what do I need to do in order to get my shutdown/restart working again without logging out of my account?

NOTE - with each software update attempt that I ended up forcing to quit, I reinstalled Lion in hopes of fixing things. That fixed it, but then I would have to update iTunes and the Airport utility in order to be up to date, and that seems to be what is causing the restart/shutdown problem.

Any clues would be helpful!
