As the topic says how can you tell if there are software updates for non Apple products? I can see how some sofware/firmware is updated via the OS update and also see how App Store applications are updated but what about the rest?

Will programs like Chrome, Skype, HandBrake, and even Flash update in the background or at least let me know there is a newer version?

Not having used mac os x yet I'd suspect it would work exactly like with windows, the programs would have their own updater, and when installing you'd at some point be prompted to decide whether or not you'll allow automatic downloads for that particular piece of software to be downloaded.

Most apps have their own update process that will tell you when an update is available.

Some of them use a framework called Sparkle that will allow you to download and relaunch in one hit.
