I can't upgrade any software. I always freeze at some point during "writing files". I am reluctant to reinstall the original software as I am yet to find option for saving existing files/data. Do I really need to do this (reinstall) or should I stop being stingy and just go and buy another hard drive. Computer is less than 3 months old so I am fairly unhappy to spend money when I think Apple should come to the party. Please advise.

No, I don't have a backup! It is just a home computer with email and photo's. No big deal....except the photos but by your tone you think I am asking for trouble not doing backup!

ALWAYS have a backup. There's no reason not to. Your data is only as valuable as your last backup.

Since you don't have one I take it that your data has no value?

I have a year of Time Machine backups for my notebook.
