I fired up the old beast (dell XPX 720 desktop) as my wife is on her HP and the Ipad was charging when I came across an article that talked about Apple possibly producing a solar panel this year on the top of the clamshell to extend the life of the battery. Is this a probability at the end of this year or just a fantasy.

Fantasy. There's not enough current in a solar cell the size of a laptop to to do anything useful.

That, plus it would rarely be in full sunlight. Most people do not leave their laptops tanning in the sun, and specifically avoid direct sunlight it when working.

Apple patenting something has almost nothing to do with them actually producing it and if they do it doesn't mean it's coming soon. Like others have stated today's solar panels are nowhere near powerful enough.
