Nuts!
I bought a mid 2017 27” iMac August that year.
Configured it w/
4.2 GHz quad core i7
1TB SSD
Radeon Pro 580 8GB
and self upgraded RAM with pair of 16GB Crucial DDR4 2400’s.
Definitely over-kill for our needs, but the Mrs was getting into pro photography, so was looking at best we could afford since we’d be owing it for many years.
Cost to me was in the $2.8K range.
After having some user account security issues with younger member of household, started contemplating needs for 2019 model w/T2 chip, and that the AppleCare extended warranty was just about expired figured we’d sell and buy factory refurb, but would need to cough up some more dough over what I expected to get (Apple offered 1.4K in trade-in) once sold on eBay.
Comps for the mid 2017 were in the 2.2 range.
After a bit more research and time taken to create listing, figured I’d start high for a week, then possibly accept/make offers or interested watchers.
To my great pleasure, it sold within a few days for full listed price of 2.6K!
That day, I received notification the 2020 iMac’s had launched. For kicks I decided to price one out.
To my great shock, it looked like I was going to be able to afford a brand new mid-tier 3.3GHz six core custom configured w/1TB SSD without any $’s out of pocket.
Minor step down from 4.2GHz 2017 processor.
Unclear how the Radeon Pro 5300 4GB compares with the 2017 580 8GB, but doubt I’ll notice any difference in our pedestrian usage.
I was also originally on the fence about including the 32GB 2400MHz RAM, but looks like that was a good call on two accounts:
The top dollar realized for the sale and that the 2020 iMac uses 2600MHz.
Comically was also waffling on including the Magic Mouse 2 & Numeric Keypad, forgetting it was just a $30 dollar upgrade.
So, TLNR
Have a 2020 iMac being configured and order processing as we speak for essentially what I made selling the hopped up mid 2017....
