When you sell your iPad how do you keep your unlimited data plan for the next iPad?

Then you sold your unlimited data plan. That SIM card was your key.

Those SIM cards sell for about $1000 by themselves on eBay.

It's not a loss yet! The owner of your iPad doesn't have your log in info for your acct. so he/she can't change it over to his/her name and lock you out. So just activate your new iPad w/ your unlimited plan (you don't need your old SIM) you'll be fine. It will automatically disable the Sim in your previous Air.

Except that I never put the sim from my last one and I still qualified for unlimited data when I replaced it.

This. SIM not required.

If your plan is with AT&T, you can go to their iPad Landing site and enter your new imei number and ICCID number and your unlimited plan will be applied to your new device. I've done this with every new iPad. (Assuming your sim doesn't activate automatically.)

Google "iPad landing"
