I sold my iPhone 4. It was backed up when it was on 5.0.1 or 5.1. Now that I tried restoring my backup to my old iPhone 3G, it says the software on the 3G is too old to be backed up from my iPhone 4 backup.

Any help! I lost everything. :(

If your iPhone is a 3GS, you can update it to iOS 5.1 or iOS 5.0.1 (whichever your iPhone 4 had) and then try a restore.

This will not work on an iPhone 3G as the minimum requirement for iOS 5.x.x is the 3GS.

Update your 3g and it shouldn't be a problem. If this isn't possible then you may be screwed.

You need to get a 3GS or i4 or 4S then.
What firmware version was you i4 backup created on?
You cant use a 5.0.1 backup for example and restore that to an iphone 3G on 4.2.1
The iphone has to be on the same firmware or higher firmware than the backup file.

Unfortunately you're out of luck. The only thing you may have lost is any pictures and settings as everything else can easily be synced (pictures too if you imported them into a photo manager).
