Getting the scanner of my multi-device printer Canon Pixma MP568 to work with Mac OS X 10.6.7 via USB connection cost me countless hours, since the software on the CD didnt support the OS X versions after 10.5. or so. And as much as I searched, I didnt find a solution on the net, only quite similar unsolved problems. I also posted here to get help and was very glad to get a response. But unfortunately my problem was still not solved.
So for the benefit of others who may go through a similar misery Id like to share how I made it work. Not sure if each and every step of it is necessary, but if nothing else works it may be worth it giving it a try:
- First I deleted the printer via Apple - System Preferences - Print and Fax.
- Next I removed the printer from the USB port and switched it off.
- Then I deleted everything concerning Canon. I went in Finder to Macintosh HD, opened Library - Printers - Canon and deleted first the printer, then the scanner and last the empty folder. After that I opened CFM Support, which is another folder in the Library. There I deleted the file BJExtDDI. These steps I took almost exactly according to the Canon website how to remove unused mp drivers, for details see http://support-in.canon-asia.com/contents/IN/EN/8200523700.html . I did get a problem deleting the scanner file though. In order to be able to delete it, I had to Secure Empty the trash.
- After that I grazed through nearly all the folders in HD - Library in order to remove everything Canon that could possibly interfere. After making a backup of the concerned files (just to be on the safe side) I deleted all the Canon stuff in the following folders: Application Support, Cache and Preferences.
- Then I went back to Finder, opened Applications and trashed the Canon folder there too.
- Only now I shut down the Mac and waited for 2 minutes or so.
- After that I attached first the printer to the USB port and switched it on. Only then did I restart the Macbook. (This is certainly very common to longterm Mac users, but unknown to Mac Newbies like me. PCs are always first switched on, and the printer is connected after. With Mac its just the opposite.)
- Next I checked the status of the printer in Apple - System Preferences - Print and Fax. There was only the printer, and no life sign of the scanner.
- Now I opened again Apple and chose Software Update. I downloaded and installed the Canon Update and the Java Update. (Not sure if the latter made a difference.) However, I steered completely clear of the latest Mac OS X update since I had just read that this one again meant trouble for the Canon device. Sincerely no thanks!
- After installing the downloads I unplugged the printer again from the USB port and switched it off. Only then I shut down the Mac.
- Once more after about a 2 minute wait I attached the printer back to the USB port and switched it on before switching on the Mac.
- And now I got a pleasant surprise when I opened Apple - System Preferences - Print and Fax: Finally the printer AND the scanner were displayed.
- Next I opened Image Capture (accessed either via Applications folder or spotlight) and did not expect the scanner to work. For I had tried tons of things for months and it never really worked. But thankfully now it finally WORKS.
Now I wish you the best of luck that your problem too can be solved! What likely did the trick for me is that I deleted ALL the Canon stuff first and that I then downloaded and installed ONLY the Canon update via Macs Software Update and NO driver from the Canon website, since obviously these 2 must have conflicted each other.
