I have two M2 machines - a base M2 MBA and a base M2 macmini - where screen sharing between them does not work. Sharing to/from Intel macs from/to the M2 machines work, however. Of course screen sharing is turned on (turning them off and then on doesn't work); remote management is off. Firewall is not an issue which is what the popup error message says to check. File sharing works.

I don't see any complaints on these forums about this issue so it must be something really obvious I am missing. This is the first time in 15 years of using macs that I have encountered this issue. Really stumped on this one.

Yup. I have the same problem.

I figured it out. Had to turn of screen sharing and file sharing, then hard reboot, then turn them back on. Duh.
