Hi

I'm using inFuse, and I noticed that for Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 content, it's outputting as MultiChannel PCM 5.1 ( showing from my SONOS app).

On 16.1, it's outputting correctly as Dolby Digital Plus 5.1

However, if I turn on "Change Format" in the sound setting to Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 , it will output Dolby Digital Plus 5.1, but I think this goes through an additional process of decoding, then encoding...

Anyone else noticed this as well?

Also tested a few content from NetFlix, same result, no more Dolby Digital Plus 5.1. But Dolby Atmos is outputting correctly.

Huge let down of software "update" as always from Apple..

UPDATE: I think I might have remembered it wrong. According to several posts below, Apple TV never outputs bitstream DD+ from the content...

Interesting. I don't think that's how I remembered though..

In 16.1, I remembered if the content is DD+5.1, it shows up as DD+5.1 on my SONOS app. Now it shows up as MC PCM 5.1.

If Apple TV 4k can set the output to DD+ 5.1, why it can't do DD+ ?

Dolby ATMOS shows up as Dolby ATMOS on my SONOS app, not showing as PCM..

I have never seen it output bitstream audio.
tvOS decodes all and any audio internally to PCM, multichannel if needed, +MAT2.0 if Atmos.
The only other option is to force DD5.1 output in Audio settings. In that case it re-encodes the output back into DD5.1
AppleTV has never offered direct audio bitstream to HDMI.
It was possible for apps like Infuse and XBMC to bitstream to HDMI but Apple plugged that hole also already several tvOS versions back.

That is your Sonos hiding part of the details.
tvOS only supports LPCM 5.1/7.1 with Dolby MAT2.0 when outputting Atmos.

Audio Output Settings

Audio settings on the Apple TV can be adjusted through Apple TV > Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Format.

  • Auto (recommended): Audio will be sent as uncompressed, multi-channel LPCM (up to 7.1 channels and 24-bit)
  • Dolby Digital 5.1: Audio will be sent as Dolby Digital AC3 (5.1 channels and 16-bit)
  • Stereo: Audio will be sent as stereo (2.0 channels)

Thank you guys, I think I got the answers for my observation. Maybe I remembered it wrong :( I guess Apple TV never outputted DD+, but always been in MC PCM.
