A few days ago I was ready to purchase either MyWi or TetherMe but throughout my searching I found PDANet, an app I used when I had an Android phone about a year ago. Being free, I download and test drove it and works great.

I don't understand why so many are purchasing a paid app when PDAnet is free and even has some sort of feature that prevents the cell phone companies from knowing you're tethering. I'm not trolling here, just seriously wondering why I would still go about purchasing either MyWi or TetherMe?

A few days ago I set out to purchase two Cydia apps; an app that'll allow me to use FaceTime on 3G and a tethering app. 3G Unrestrictor works great and PDAnet works great.

I mention and begin this thread in the hopes of receiving an answer as Romany MyWi and TetherMe are better solutions. If so, I'll definitely buy one.

i use tetherme with 4.3.3 to use the official hotspot app. With SBSettings toggle switch, it's perfect for me.

How much is TetherMe at the moment? I continue to see conflicting prices online ranging from promotional dollar to twenty bucks.

Edit: just saw in Cydia it's five bucks. Not bad at all. I'm guessig I have to download the toggle sbsetting separately? What about not being detected by the cell phone companies?

all the apps has a chance to get caught. it's been stated many times that mywi, pdanet, and tetherme users have been caught. no one knows for sure why some people get caught and some don't.

in cydia, go to Addon's (Sbsettings) and look for PersonalHotspot Toggle

Okay, so I just bit the bullet and purchased TetherMe.

However I'm freaking out just a little bit....

..I'm under settings on my iPhone and see TetherMe. However upon clicking on it and turning on the hotspot, I can't help but notice it seems like I'm using the tethering feature Verizon or AT&T would provide. I do enjoy the blue connected status on the status bar of the phone itself, but am freaking out, not wanting to get charged extra for using this app; extra for tethering you know?

That, and the Personal Hotspot pane under WiFi, in settings now shows up, which looks identical to TetherMe.

I'm freaking out over this.

tetherme changes the setting and allows you to use the official apple hotspot. it's working correctly.

also, when you're in Settings and see Tetherme, do not change anything. Just go to Network > Personal Hotspot and change whatever WEP key you want to use. After that, go to the the main settings screen and at the very top, you'll see a Personal Hotspot toggle on/off.

The sbsettings personalhotspot toggle is used for that toggle.

What about the apn setting? I'd imagine we'd want the cell phone companies to think we're using all this data on our phOnes and not tethering.

So, I should be good so long as I only use the TetherMe section and not the personal hotspot section under wifi in settings?

when you installed tetherme, it already config'ed everything (APN etc...). you do NOT need to do anything else.

when you installed it, all you have to do is go to Settings > Network > Personal Hotspot and type in whatever WEP you want to use.

after that, just toggle it on and off anywhere. you do NOT have to use strictly tetherme's setting to toggle on/off...

the whole point of tetherme is to use apple's official hotspot...

awesome! finally, where can i download that sbsetting toggle? cant seem to find it.

So im back. Turns out this personal hotspot settings doesn't work for the Verizon iPhone considering the iPhone is at 4.2.8 while it requires 4.3+.

If anyone has any alternatives I'm all ears. Thanks!!!

My case was pretty special: I wanted to share the 3G connection of my iPad1 to my Wi-Fi only iPad2 and iPod Touches.

I played quite a bit with all the available solutions (Tether, PDANet etc.) and, finally, went for MyWi. It's a bit pricey but works just fine for this purpose.

I've also purchased the $5 on-demand add-on but haven't installed it yet on my client iPT 4th gen to allow it to be in constant connection to the Net to be able to continuously receive FaceTime calls.

I am not seeing the hotspot toggle for SBS, which one do you use
