So I have my new M1 Pro 16" hooked up to my Pro Display XDR, and some 8k 60 FPS videos are still stuttering like the Intel Mac I had. I'm using the latest version of Chrome (M1 version). What is going on here? Some play fine while others lag, is it some codec issue (VP9 works but AV1 doesn't) ? For example this video stutters on 8k. Any fix?

If you disable AV1 do these macbooks handle 8k using VP9 ok? (may depend on browser used - in firefox I know you can manually disable av1 with config)

There are only a little amount of devices that have AV1 hardware decoder. 12.1 beta on Safari disabled AV1 by default AFAIK. So yeah. Stick with VP9. On chromium and Firefox browsers you can just use an extension to disable AV1

Things that have AV1 decode now:

- roku ultra
- new fire tv 4k max stick
- all tiger lake intel chips with iris xe graphics

Kind of disappointing it's not available here

Yeh. Software decoding Is still fine tho for 4k HDR AFAIK so worst case it should be fine if you're not doing 8K
