Afternoon all,

I have been reading a fair bit about the heat / throttling issues with the new MacBook Pro's. I already have a 2016 one that I use for generic light work as well as editing images on Photoshop CC... These files can be up to 2gb in size but mostly around 250mb. I never edit video.

What are your thoughts on the throttling issues on the newest Mac's in terms of photoshop? I am assuming that my tasks are nowhere near as demanding as a Final Cut / PP video edit, so will I run into the same issues. I am mostly looking to upgrade due to 32GM RAM and Large SSD.

Help : )

Why are you looking for an upgrade? What spec are you looking to upgrade to?

My question is this, do you currently experience any issues (i.e. lagging, very long processing times during batch edits) when using photoshop, or do you have any issues with your keyboard on your current 2016 MacBook Pro?

If the answer to that is no, then I wouldn't trade up unless money isn't important, or you just want to get newest and greatest machine (nothing wrong with that of course).

However, the answer to that is yes, then I'd suggest getting a 2018 MBP i7 13 or 15 inch model. The i9 would be overkill for what you are saying you are doing, and currently community feedback seems to be showing more i9 throttle issues than is being seen on the i7.

Also, if you have 16gb of ram on your current machine, I'd use a tool like iStat or the builtin Activity Monitor to see how much you use on a daily basis. I'll bet (based on what you say you use it for), you never go over 50 or 60% memory capacity, and 32 gb would be overkill, even in the foreseeable future. That kind of memory is really targeted towards people using Final Cut pro or other video processing applications.

Thanks for your reply.

I would be looking to upgrade to:

2.6 or 2.9 ghz 15 Inch
32GB Ram
2TB SSD

Currently have:

2.9Ghz 2016 15 Inch - Quad
16GB Ram
1TB SSD

I use around 10-14gb Ram a day it seems but I know from memory that when I use photoshop it rarely has much headroom.

Interestingly I had my whole top plate replaced by apple due to a keyboard issue... When they tried to repair it, they shorted the motherboard / main board and had to replace it all.

Currently the keyboard is ok, but at times sticks.

I experience slowness with photoshop after a lot of use. And also when editing large (over 1gb files)... But not with light editing.

I know I dont really need a new laptop, mine is ok, but I know I would appreciate a newer, quicker model with more storage. Currently have 50GB free of 1TB - I will clear this out soon - only just recently at this capacity.

Actually from what it sounds like, you’d definitely benefit from the upgrade, especially if you are using close to the full 16gb ram and 1tb memory already.

From what I have seen the 2.9 is still faster in peaks? But if performing heavy editing constantly for a prolonged period of time, this is when the throttling kicks in? I know that isnt great, but it that really going to happen with photo editing? Where the actual processor power is only used half the time?

This is an older thread, by now you know throttlinggate has largely evaporated with a patch from Apple, and that you really have nothing to worry about with photoshop and the new 2018 MacBook Pro. I use it routinely on mine. I do agree with the folks that say the i9 is probably overkill... my i7 feels plenty fast.
