Some discs just won't read on my DVD drive!

Does anyone have any clue what's wrong? My MBP just refuses to read some DVDs. I put it into my drive, the drive spins up a bit then stops, and repeats this every 5 seconds. It doesn't respond to the Eject button until about 2 minutes later. These discs read fine under my desktop's DVD drive, as well as my DVD player.

Anyone have any clue?
 
It's possible the drive is broken. Is the number of discs not read big? Or just a few?
