I got a popup on both my phone and Mac saying that some iCloud data isn'y syncing. This device isn't syncing your end-to-end encrypted data across all of your devices. It includes saved passwords and data from health and maps. Verify your account information to resume syncing.

I then try to verify the data. It asks for my iCloud password & the PIN number for my phone. I know that I am typing them in correctly, but verification still fails every time. Any one been through this before or have any ideas on how to resolve this.

Think you've been had re one of those fake "your account has been compromised" popups. I've never had to enter a PIN for my phone to get into iCloud.

So, appleid.apple.com NOW to change your password!

ADD: or not. We talking lockdown mode? Not using that myself so my guess is a WAG.

Sometimes, Apple will ask for a random device's passcode for setting up a new device and logging in to iCloud.

Are you sure it's asking for the current device's passcode and not one of your other (or old) devices? Also, there should be a "forgot" option which will allow you to use another device to approve the login.

POPup is probably the wrong word, I get a notification, and it's coming from my settings & it's definitely from Apple.

Yup, I even tried to change the device as I figured that might be the problem, but I tried 3 different devices, all of them with a known pin & all of them are saying that the verification failed.

I wonder if this is somehow related to an old device I turned on for the first time in a long time yesterday. It's an original iPhone SE. But I don't know what that woulds top my devices from syncing.

Could be. Add in what @adrianlondon mentioned, could see a message ala “a new device is using Messages” when a new device is added, iCloud is turned off/on but with trying to sync to old phone.

So, maybe asking for old phone PIN in OP?

(personally, any old phones I keep around, I reset as new and leave it like that. No surprises and can setup only essential stuff piecemeal if need to use phone for real)

good idea, thanks
I also is been getting on my cell, a "not synching, must enter cellphone unlock code" but I've noticed my stuff is been synching fine, so not touching that potential granade.

One lastest scam is the "overdue bridge toll."

That's a great idea.

That will do it

Assuming that it was logged on to that Apple ID, and connected to the internet, icloud is probably telling you that the old se isn’t syncing properly

Sign out of iCloud on all your devices, sign back in on the ones you actually use. That will usually fix it

Thank you. Will try that this weekend.

LOL. What's new? I just don't rely on any of their services for anything really critical. I just never use iCloud Drive for example.

iCloud Drive has gotten way better than it used to be. I do wish it had the transparency of Dropbox regarding sync status, but over the past couple years they've finally filled in missing things like being able to "pin" a file to keep it downloaded or "evict" a file off your drive if you're running tight on space or just don't need it. I find that these days I just rarely think about iCloud Drive at all, it's just working in the background doing its thing -- which is good.

We use Google Drive on our Macs at work, by contrast, and god help you if a file gets stuck. The whole thing seizes up and can take hours to fix itself. It's also got a hidious glitch where it makes various apps (InDesign, Illustrator and Preview) totally beachball out repeatedly if you open from a folder that Google Drive is syncing. It's an awful product and makes me appreciate iCloud Drive a lot more.

Yeah there as well. Have had sync problems, data loss, all sorts of weirdness. I just don't bother now. I just Airdrop stuff I need to the phone and back again.

My icloud just does email / reminders / calendar and a couple of synced notes now.
