Some iMessages have gone.

I have upgraded to iOS 6 and some of my iMessages have gone. Has anyone experienced this.
I am using an iPhone 4.

I've never understood why some people are bothered about messages disappearing or being accidentally deleted. They are just messages you have read, right? Or am I missing something?
