Some of my photos just vanished leaving only placeholders in the gallery!

Please look at the attachment. I dunno what happened but a a good 50-60 pictures just vanished and the only thing that shows in the gallery is the place holder. Anyone face such a situation before? What can I do to recover the pics? Also I've always had icloud on with photos so is there any place online or a way where I can download those pics?
