Before you guys like to post your images from your iPhone or other camera, please do check your GPS location before you posting the images just for your own safely.
A: You must be wondering why do i need to check GPS.
Every times as you click the camera from your iPhone, the GPS data will tag along with your image using EXIF data inside of the JPEG data. - that will exposed your current location pin point (accurate enough) either at home or work.
B: Again you must be wondering why should i be bother about GPS who cares?
1: Well, you know your image might contain something is really valuable object(s) can be found in either foreground or background of the image(s) where the criminal will take advantage of it.
2: GPS tags will expose your location, meaning online user who will know who you are and where you live.
C: Ok i understand, how can i prevent GPS data?
You have two options to prevent this type of situation:
1: Find appropriate software that will allow you strip out EXIF tags from the JPEG image before you can upload the images anywhere online.
2: You can turn it off GPS data by going to….
iPhone - Goto Settings > Privacy > Location Services > Camera > Click Never
You can always turn on/off when ever you need to - that what i do most of the times. I wish there is option if you want to tag GPS data for this photo some where in the camera app.
D: How can i check if my image contain GPS data?
MacOS:
There is app called Preview which installed all Mac operating system by default i think
1: Just click any of your FileName.JPG (Image & Preview app will open up)
2: Press the keyboard button: Cmd i (general info will pop-up)
3: click on that tab where you can see the Black dot with i (that will take you to see the EXIF data)
4: You will notice either two thing GPS tag might be there or not
If you see the GPS - Click on that tab GPS (that’s where your location is showing up)
if you don’t see the GPS - then you got nothing to worry about. If you really want to see GPS data, then go back to [C - Option 2] make sure you click on ‘While using the app’
Ultimately, it’s your own decision if you want to follow or not, I’m just here to remind you that’s all really.
One more thing: I would strongly advise you NOT to turn off Location Services (yellow box), because you will need them for sharing your location during emergency calls - if you do turn off Location Services then i will not be held any responsibility for that.
