Hey guys, I had some quick questions for anyone who's familiar with jailbreaking... I have a iPhone 3G that's currently running 3.1.3 and is unlocked using ultrasn0w.

  • Is there anyway to update the firmware to 4.0.1 without upgrading the baseband so that it can be unlocked again?
  • Would the iPhone 3G respond better on it's current set-up (i.e. 3.1.3), or on iOS 4.0.1 with fakeclockup installed? At the moment it's fairly responsive, but still laggy.
  • Are there any Cydia tweaks that can help speed up the phone?

Thanks for any help! :)

The advice you'll see a lot here is stay on 3.1.3 for the iPhone 3g.

You've got a good setup. Don't "fix" it.

Sn0wbreeze is a way of updating without changing the baseband, that for one I know. Don't know anything about unlocking; never done it and never will.
Nothing on Cydia can make your phone faster. iOS 4 can, though.

iPhone 3g doesn't use SHSH. You can go to any version you want, but I'm telling you--3.1.3 will run smoothest on the iPhone 3g.

The iPhone 3G doesn't use SHSH only up to iOS 3.1.3. You WILL NEED SHSH for iOS 4.0 and above, and since Apple stopped signing 4.0.1, you can't update to it.
I just jailbroke iOS 4.2.1 for a friend of mine using Sn0wbreeze, runs like butter. Very smooth. I don't get why you people say old is better; old is slow, no matter how good it is, it's slow (Think Windows XP and 7)

iOS 4 is not going to be faster on a 3G. Trust me, stay where you are. I put iOS 4 on my old 3G and it was so slow it's hardly usable.

Since there's so many people saying 3.1.3 is better than 4.2.1, here's what you should do.
Back up your JB data and update to 4.2.1. Use it for 3 days. If you don't like it, downgrade back to 3.1.3.

Which blobs do you have? That determines which iOS you can install.
Pwnage or snowbreeze are the only ways to preserve your bb.

Interesting. Since I no longer have a 3G, I haven't kept up on information about it.
The iPhone 3g does NOT use SHSH for iOS 4.0 and up in the same way the 3gs and 4 do. The "soft" SHSH check for the 3g on 4.0+ can be defeated if you don't have SHSH saved. There is no way to defeat the SHSH check for the 3gs and 4 if you don't have blobs saved. Read http://blog.iphone-dev.org/post/833937433/blob-banter

Me neither.
So pretty much you cant restore to official 4.1 on a 3G if you dont have blobs but you can use redsnow and pwnage tool to go around it?
I know probably restoring a 3G to custom IPSW wont require SHSH's but how would you use redsnow for that?
