We were hoping to catch up with Microsoft's "Lauren," a regular gal who Microsoft surprised with $1,000 to buy a laptop...in a national commercial. And it ends up she's an LA-based, SAG-eligible actress.

Tracked down by TechFlash, "Lauren" (who is really Lauren De Long) says on her site "[she] booked what she thought was a "Market and Research" job regarding laptops. But that's not all she booked...actually Lauren found out they were shooting a national commercial! Tears, laughter and excitement greeted this new development."

The Wall Street Journal reported that the Microsoft test group had been assembled from "recruited prospective computer shoppers." Shoppers are distinctly different from people looking for jobs. Regardless-

Reading through De Long's resume, you find that her "special skills" include Cheerleading, Ear Prompter, Hula Hoop, and Stage Combat. So wait, she's an actress AND a cheerleader AND a stage combatant, but she's STILL not cool enough to use a Mac? No way. We just don't buy it.

We were unable to reach Lauren De Long, but we did leave her a message mentioning one of our readers' offers to give her a free 17-inch Apple PowerBook. When site TechFlash called, apparently De Long said she had signed an NDA restricting her from speaking about her experiences with the HP laptop.

This is quite.... expected really.

So what if she's an actress? The situation was a setup from the get go, and the 'criteria' set forth in the commercial was pretty comical itself.

They still do (sort of) have a point about prices though.

I see it as you get what you pay for,

I always compare it to, a ford focus and a ferrari both have 4 wheels and a steering wheel, but which one does it better?

well lets go on that argument right there.

Which one meets you needs better for the price you pay.

For 99% of that is going to be the ford focus.

Apple 17 Macbook Pro = Ferrari.

sub $1000 17in HP laptop = Ford Focus.

While the Ferrari no question ask is better but the ford focus is much better deal to cover you needs. While yes there will be times the "Ferrair" would be better just those few times the cost is not justifiable.

Both, it depends on what you want a car for.
So is the PC a ferrari? Considering the price of very high end, gaming quality PCs would outperform most Macs.

makes you rethink about all those many many people on the "Hi I am a pc and I am...." (an actor/actress) adverts.

LOL

"Revealed: Actress used in advert shocker!"

Whatever next? "Exclusive: Yes! Bears do do it in the woods! Read the full shocking story inside!"

So she can in noway take the offer of that 17-inch powerbook?
What if she just says she wants it, but isn't going to publicly announce any performance differences.

This is not new.

Wishes the Mac fanboys would just let this die already.

What a surprise.

If you watch the commercial, there's a guy walking down the sidewalk approaching the door of the Apple store as she walks in. On the shot where she's leaving the store, the same guy is still walking, 10 feet past the door.

She did some quick shopping!

Either way, she's hot. I don't really care if she uses a Mac or a PC.

You can have her. I found her manner highly irritating. Then again, I know several people who act like that and have bad experiences to contend with. :vomit smiley:

I thought the NDA part was especially interesting. If Vista is all that, why would M$ have her sign anything forbidding talking about her experiences using the computer?

She's not bad. I wouldn't mind giving her 17 inches :D

He'd have to invite 3 friends. :D

What if the Ford Focus had nearly the same performance as the Ferrari, the driver isn't able to tell the difference in performance, the Ford cost 4 times less, and the Ford made the owner happy despite not looking as cool?

Agreed, this really isn't surprising or news.
