After seeing this article: https://www.macrumors.com/2012/07/16/claimed-front-panel-of-white-next-generation-iphone-surfaces/

what came into my mind is that it doesn't correspond with this article here: https://www.macrumors.com/2012/04/23/next-generation-iphone-part-leaks-begin-with-home-buttons/

the home buttons wouldn't fit, because they are square at the edges. That is weird, I don't know why someone would make a fake home button complete with the mechanism, or photoshop one to show this difference.

So I have 2 suggestions: 1. A guy photoshopped the front panels as a joke,
2. Apple are deliberately leaking various parts, maybe some fakes, to track leak source. After all, what better way is there to track leaks and "double down" on secrecy.

The home button is still round. The rectangular part goes under the front panel like the tabs on the 4S home button that is pictured in the article.

what this guy said.

apple is doing this to fix the unresponsive home button that has plagued a lot of users..

In case you still can't picture what everyone is talking about...

That front panel looks legit. That's the front facing camera that was moved to the top center right? And next to the earpiece is the proximity? They switched spots.

Obviously we don't know if this IS the next iPhone.

A single button can be quite entertaining. Especially while it works.

Once it quits, rendering ones phone a brick, the fun stops.

Rumor has it that Apples next innovation will be a touch sensitive button. It seems that it's a logical move.

Or maybe they're worried about copying Samsung, Motorola, HTC, LG, et. al.

One things for certain. When you have a few of the new high end smartphones with the modern button, the old fashioned mechanical one seems slow & clunky.
