When I pick up the top end of the iphone about an inch or so and then drop it down it sounds like there is something loose.. anyone else?

Yup. Definitely a rattle in the iPhone 4. It's localized to the top near the earpiece/camera. Hold the phone on the bottom near the home button area in one hand, and tap the the phone against your knuckle on your other hand in the camera area. It rattles.

Haven't played with one to see if it's the same as the 3gs but they make a rattle due to the auto focus in the camera.

Edit: The easiest way to tell if it's the auto focus is open the camera app, shake the phone so you can hear the rattle and tap the screen to auto focus. If it stops that's what it is.

If it is something like the auto-focus, or something that is just normal across all devices, its strange that apple would on one hand have a device with an accelerometer that encourages you to shake it, and on the other hand have something built in that rattles when shaken...

Even if its only a perceived flaw it makes the build quality seem less than ideal

This was covered last year with the 3GS. It's the camera on the back of the phone. Nothing else. Don't worry, it's ok :)
