With most of Apple’s high end products: iPads, MacBooks and iPhones, it’s not incredibly expensive to purchase based on the factor that resale value is relatively high.

For instance, say I have an M1 Max MacBook Pro and want an M3 Max, I can either trade my laptop in or sell on 3rd party market). I will recoup a fair amount of value in the trade in or sale.

With the Vision Pro, the resale value may be abysmal on the open market due to it being a product you wear and considerations of hygiene and such.

There is also the possibility that Apple will not buy these back at all or will offer negligible value on trade in. For instance, Apple currently only offers trade in on iPhone, MacBook, Apple Watch and iMac/Max studio etc. Apple does not offer trade in at all of AirPods Max even though those are $500 headphones.

There is more risk of buying these and losing most of the value versus buying a M3 max MacBook Pro or a Mac studio which can be traded in and hold their value.

Thus the proposition of buying these with intent to upgrade in 1-2 years for the next iteration may not be an option via trade in.

My guess is you would take around a $2K hit selling it 3rd party after 1-2 years. Assuming your device is clean and in immaculate condition. By time the next iteration is released, maybe $500.

The fabric part that touches your face can be replaced, and would undoubtably need to be because that'll be disgusting after a few weeks, let alone a year or more. Might make private sales more palatable, but you'd have to factor that replacement into the resale price.

Good news, though, is that Apple will almost certainly offer to recycle it for free, if nothing else, so you won't have to have old ones lying around when you upgrade.

Demand is also a factor. Most people wanting nothing to do with it will make resale above 60% pretty tough. 30% may even be a stretch. Most if not all Apple products can resell above 60% of original purchase price a year or two after purchase. This one will not.

The first one I buy will be a $500 unit on Ebay.
You'll be waiting for quite a long time.

Used AVP on eBay are selling for way over MSRP targeted towards international customers.

Trade in value?

May the lord have mercy on anyone even thinking like this

You're going to take an epic bath on these, financially speaking

Used ones aren’t selling at all. New ones are selling for about what a Vision Pro costs new + tax + shipping overseas. By the time ebay fees are factored in the sellers might be losing money, breaking even, or making a hundred bucks at most. Used ones are going to crater in value.

Always check “sold” listings when looking at ebay historical data.

I feel like it's going to be a 1st gen Air type of situation. The next one's going to be much more mainstream in scope and much more usable that your investment will be obliterated

It's just one of the reasons (aside from lack of development so far in terms of what I actually see AR interesting for) I'm not going to bother with V1.

This is a really keen insight I hadn’t thought of or seen before. If the platform is ultimately successful, which I still am in question of given this first iteration, I think it’s a very apt comparison as far as hardware expense and evolution.
