Something weird with my MBP in sleep mode..

I was under the assumption when the lid is closed its in sleep mode and everything is off right?

I usually have firefox open with facebook page, and this morning I noticed I started getting PM chime alerts when someone sends you a PM.

I thought this was weird, anyone else experience this?
