Sometimes when I see the acronym MWSF...

I confuse it with NSFW.

It takes me a few minutes to realize that MWSF is safe for work, because I do not work for apple ...

what does NSFW mean?

Not Safe For Work

usually things that might be crude or otherwise unviewable on company time ...

A word formed from the initial letters of a series of words. (eg, IEEE is an acronym for Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers)

NSFW - Not Safe For Work

MWSF - Mac World San Francicso

how are these not acronyms?

For Macworld is but one word.

Which, in this strange, simultaneously grammar defying and grammar compelling cross section of time and space, would require you to change your acronym to MSF.

But, since following convention would just confuse everyone all the more, screw it.

Language is our skin, it's not a series of blockades you setup to let a parade go by.

Abbreviation
The shortened form of a written word or phrase (cf. Acronym and Nickname). Inc. magazine is an excellent example of an abbreviation which outdoes its full form by conveying an insider image.

Acronym
A word formed from the initial letter or letters of a series of words in a phrase (cf. Abbreviation). The advantages of a commercial acronym are that it may challenge the consumer to "solve the puzzle," as if it were a vanity license plate (e.g. TCBY, The Country's Best Yogurt), or else present the consumer with a prefabricated bit of upscale slang (e.g. DKNY, Donna Karan New York and MGD, Miller Genuine Draft). The chief disadvantage is that it may be unintelligible and forgettable without a prohibitive investment in advertising. It took James Earl Jones to make "This is CNN" a meaningful phrase. [Greek akros "topmost" + onuma "name"]
Quite different

On a completely separate topic, the smilie conundrum returns: :)

Too bad calculus is right. :p

LASER is an acronym. NATO is an acronym. Even NAFTA is an acronym. MWSF isn't, nor is WWDC or MR (MacRumors) because you can't say them without saying each letter individually. You can read "NAFTA" as if it were a word, even though it's not.
It wouldn't take you a lot of time to research and discover that there is no universally accepted, authoritative definition that dictates an acronym must be a separate pronounceable word.

Talking of Feck, I saw a great T-Shirt the other day.

FCEK - Irish Connection.

Made me laugh anyway :)
