I may get roasted a bit for this and I am OK with that.. Before I used the AW I was a Garmin user for running/biking, etc. Even on those OLD (and HUGE) Garmins I could access workout history... but on one of the most advanced watches in the world.. nope.. no workout history. Songs, photos, podcasts? Of course... but not activities.

This is a choice by Apple. If you have the time and interest I would ask that you provide feedback to Apple to allow local storing of activity history on the Apple Watch. I just submitted the feedback but for some reason Apple thinks this isn’t needed or wanted.

I am a bit bent right now a I (wronfully) assumed my Activity data was stored in the cloud. I am having the “This Apple Watch is no longer paired with this iPhone.” issue and so I did some device cleanup (because the history isn’t on the devices.. ) and lost it all.

I came back to Apple/AW for hardware/software stability but am regretting that right about now.

Without knowing you made a mistake. It’s cool. Just learn and move on. It’s important to understand the system you use rather than assuming things. There might be reasons that we either don’t know or understand why it’s developed the way it is today.

Can anyone think of a reason we can’t access workout history on the watch? I’ve been doing this on Garmin for at least a decade.

Apple think it’s best to use the watch for something really quick like glancing informations. They didn’t design the watch to be a substitute for iPhone. For Apple, the watch screen is too small for the kind of task you want. Of course if enough people asking for it Apple might change course.
The activity (and Health) data DO live in the cloud though, provide you have iCloud back up of those.

For the current day, you can in activity. Other thirdparty apps have there own history function on the watch. E.g. Workoutdoors (which can also do indoor workouts) and Stryd etc. With the catch, that it is only activities tracked in those apps.

I don't have it installed anymore, but Heart Analyzer can/could show independent off tracking app. However its focus is on the HR and other details are/was limited.

Garmin does not even have to be linked to a phone.
Garmin has screens smaller than AW.

I am not trying to make AW a Garmin. My point here is that how can Apple make the smartest watch in the world but not save workout data locally. My Garmin 305 from 2006 still has workout data on it. I can charge it up and go back through running and biking workouts. I also have that data saved in the cloud.

It is an active decision by Apple to not save it locally. Myself and many who use the AW for activities feel this way. There is literally no reason other than choice to not save the information on the device or it isn’t as smart as they market it.

WOD is an amazing app. That developer deserves endless kudos. Apple should send them some $ for keeping so many with the AW that considered leaving. Great data. I still contend that all that data could be stored on the watch for review at a later date without a phone.
