iPod Songs not listed under artist category

I recently just purchased a 30gb ipod and I'm having some difficulties getting songs to transfer from itunes. All of my songs are transferring but not all of them can be located by scrolling through artists. In order for me to locate certain songs I have to go through the actual song list to find them. How do I make it so that I can locate all of my songs by scrolling through the artists. I'm fairly new to the whole itunes/ipod world so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Edit the ID3 tags. Do they appear with artist in iTunes? If not, just click on the artist and type it in
(if not, click on a song/songs, right click and select get info. Then add all the info you want.)
