Hi,

I am using the Sonnet Echo Express SE-I TB3 Enclosure to run a Samsung EVO 970 NVMe SSD. The enclosure has a little fan, which I replaced with a low-noise Noctua fan. However, the noise is still getting on my nerves as the enclosure basically sits right next to me.

I was wondering: Does the NVMe really need active cooling? I understand the fan if you put other PCIe cards in the enclosure that produce a lot of heat, but an M2 SSD equipped with a heatsink sitting in a fairly "airy" enclosure with enough holes for the heat to escape shouldn't run into issues without a fan? What do you think?

With the fan the temp of the SSD sits at around 40 degrees Celsius. It's specced for up to 80 degrees (I figure it would run into thermal throttling here, but I don't think it would get that high without a fan).

Thoughts?

Cheers
