Lately within the last week or so I've noticed that the fans on my Sonnet "eGFX Breakaway Box 550" seem to randomly rev up then go back down again within a second or two. Sometimes it does it when I click a tab on Safari or scroll a webpage, but other times it does it when I'm not even touching the machine. I've had Activity Monitor open while it happens and there are no spikes in CPU or GPU load. My Macbook, a (2018 15" Pro w/ 2.6GHz i7 & 560X) is fully charged when it happens. I have an MSI RX580 in the eGPU box.

Has anyone else had this occur? It seems to stop if I disconnect and reconnect it but only for a half hour or so. I will probably contact Sonnet soon about the warranty since it's getting quite annoying. It seems to rev up loudly to a speed it didn't even hit before under heavy load.

Is what you are experiencing new? I believe this is an issue with 10.14.4. People on Reddit and egpu.io have been reporting this issue as well, with some saying that upgrading to the 10.14.5 beta resolves the issue.

I have an RX580 in an Asus XG Station Pro and have had the fan ramping issue in 10.14.4, but not in previous version of Mojave. Hopefully they resolve the issue! Send Apple feedback on MacOS if you want to raise awareness.

I don't use my eGPU everyday but now you mention it I think it may be related to the last update. I'll wait for the next patch and see what happens.
