I am on Sonoma (MacBook Air M3, 16GB, 512GB). It works very well.

Shall I:
1. Stay where I am
2. Upgrade to Sequoia
3. Update to Tahoe.

Is Sequoia fast (as fast as Sonoma)? Does it work as well as Sonoma? I really like my current OS, but if Sequoia is a genuine improvement, happy to upgrade.

I think 3. is a no no until x.5 or x.6

Thanks!

I mean if you're fine with it then stay on it. I try to stay on the oldest supported version with security updates. Then move onto the next most 'mature' release that's still supported. No reason to make yourself deal with the constant updates and bugs unless you buy a new computer of course.

Get an external SSD.
512gb in size, or perhaps a 1tb USB3.1 gen2 (faster).

Now, install a "test copy" of Sequoia onto it.
Play with that for a week or so.
Do you like it?
If so, at that point upgrade the MBP to Sequoia.

Use Sequoia as your "installed OS" for a few weeks.
How does it do for you?
If it does well, you may consider "sticking with it" for 6 months to a year.

At the same time:
Erase your external "test drive SSD".
NOW install a test copy of Tahoe onto it.
Play with that.
What do you think...?

The idea here is to not have to "ask others" about upgrading, but try things out for yourself in way that is "non-destructive" to your working OS.

With the external SSD boot drive, you can do that.
And when you're established with your new OS of choice, you can erase the external SSD and use it for other things, such as a backup...

Sequoia works fine on my M1 Air but I didn't test Sonoma since I bought the Mac like 2 months ago from ebay and it came with Sequoia pre-installed.

I think I will update to Tahoe until Sequoia just won't get any new security update.. I just can't stand how Tahoe and that Liquid glass looks. Happily, you can re-install an old copy of the OS on your Mac, not like the iPhone where you can't downgrade

Just too UGLY, to move over from Sequoia. Although sequoia is running pretty zippy anyway.

GEDDY #1;)

I am in the same boat as you are (I usually do upgrades a year later), and after a quick browse through this forum I am having second thoughts about upgrading to Sequoia. It seems that it has a lot of bugs that affect fundamental functionality such as wi-fi. Actually, I tried to upgrade it earlier in the day and it failed with "An internet connection is required to install MacOs". Needless to say, but the internet works, so that's not the real error. Maybe they did me a service :D

I think that is there are not a killer feature to update, just don't update. Specially if you machine is working fine.

Glad that my M1 Air is working amazingly with Sequoia

The only downside to this, is if you use a lot of Apple software.
They quite often move the goalposts to the latest macOS when updating apps…. 🥴

HA :p
Me on bass. I tracked, mixed and mastered.

Cover. HOME ON THE STRANGE
*DISCLAIMER*, singer insisted the vocal volume, and too low.

Man you sounds really on point! Yes, vocals are a little low but the instrumental part it's really well executed. Amazing cover!
