As a Apple + Sonos loaded household, I'll preface what is about to be dozens of posts about "the disaster" of the new app, trust completely obliterated, no speakers work at all, firstborn made ill, water pipes burst, car won't start now, etc ;) by once again pointing out that we Mac people don't even have to open the new app to use Sonos speakers:
  • Airplay works as it always did
  • Mac app is still the same Mac app
  • Home kit control remains the same
  • Home theater Sonos hooked to a TV basically has AppleTV or the TV doing the controlling
  • Etc.
I happen to have no issue at all with the new app myself but others do. However, I can easily go months without opening the app and never miss the many ways I use & enjoy them. I suspect most about to bash away could probably not open the app for at least weeks at a time too.

Now on with the (usual) show... 🍿

The 15% upgrade coupons they were giving out if you already owned anything Sonos work on it. That's how I did it. Very happy with Arc Ultra. But yeah, overall wouldn't expect a general sale yet.
man missed out on this! was this a personalized coupon?

You’re completely right. While I do think there was (still is to a more minor degree) a number of serious issues caused by the app redesign several months back, I don’t usually interact with it at all in my all Apple household. And in that light, Sonos is still the best wireless sound system on the market and the one best suited for any Apple aficionado. The speakers themselves remain absolutely fantastic.

After supporting lamps, speakers , and other setups from them for work. I will never buy their products with their current requirements. It sucks because their products look great (better than Apple), and sound great as well. I just don't subscribe to the personal information they require before you can even play a simple tune through one of their speakers.

  1. Why am I forced to use their app to play music to a speaker?
  2. Why do they need 'precise' location to activate , use a product?
  3. Why do their devices need to see other items on my network? (you can bypass this but system is flakey when you reject)
If the speakers worked without those details i may be interested in giving them more personal information for added features, but will never consent as a requirement. Sorry Sonos, it is none of your business who I am, or where I am using your proudcts!

It is actually far easier to share a HomePod as a shared speaker, yet both of them fail as neither are as easy to use as an open Bluetooth speaker.

You know who makes good speakers? Klipsch. We have been using them for decades. They're just speakers. Nothing fancy but of the highest quality.
