sony bravia tv signal

I had a macbook hooked up using HDMI to DVI cable and everything was working fine for months. Then one day I plug into the macbook like usual and the Bravia tv no longer had a signal.

Before I go buy a new cable can someone perhaps suggest settings I should look at first. I did try going to Displays and clicked to recognize displays, all I get is light blue screen which never goes back to display the desktop like it usually does.
 
I hope the mini Displayport isn't broken because I purchased the macbook to see movies on my LCD tv. That would be a tragedy. And all my friends and family were impressed with the macbook.

I'm buying a new mini Displayport to DVI cable because I tested it out on 19" LCD monitor and that also did not work. So two things appear to be the problem:

- mini Displayport to DVI cable is broke
or
- mini Displayport on macbook is broke
