I'm looking for some cheap alternatives to be able to download all of my existing video and use them in iMovie. Is this possible? Do I need to buy Final Cut Studio or some other application? Could I get a converter to change the file type?

I don't know why the SR220 is not compatible with iMovie, when the similar model (SR200-smaller hard drive) is on the compatibility list.

The compatibility list is those cameras Apple has tried. It does not necessarily exclude yours. I do recommend though that you have your iMovie and QuickTime updated to the most recent updates.

If you have tried the camera and it doesn't work, then perhaps something like MPEG Streamclip can convert the files for you. Another tools is ffmpegX.
