My boss is looking for a DV Cam.

-$1500 budget
-will be used for short films and promotional videos
-automatic everything
-HD if the price is right, but it's not a necessity
-He trusts Sony but is open to other suggestions
-He's open to HDD equipped cameras, but would prefer DV tape

Suggestions?

Just Sony? If so, why?

What features is your boss looking to get out of the camera? Manual exposure and/or focus? Standard DV or HDV?

You need to provide more specifics and then people can help.

Thanks

I think that might be a bit too much camera.

He'd also like something new.

I objected, but it's a business purchase and for many reasons, buying new seems to be easier, even though it obviously costs more.

Does it have to be Sony?

What about a Canon GL1/GL2 or a Panasonic DVX-100?

No

No, it doesn't have to be a Sony, but he prefers them. Anything else would be a harder sell, but I have no problem trying that if it's the right camera.

So he didn't specifically ask for a "DVCam"? Because only sony makes those, they are the more professional models. If you want mini-dv, the High-Definition Canon HV20 has been highly recommended here on the fourms.

The HV20 is also inexpensive enough that the $1500 budget will cover the camera, microphone, extra batteries, camera bag, etc.,.
