Apparently according to reputable sources

r/iphone - Sony IMX903 sensor on 16 Pro

and https://m.sohu.com/a/810403105_114760

The 16 Pro/Pro Max apparently has the IMX903

Is this possible? IMX903 with same aperture/sensor size as the IMX803? But I thought according to https://www.gsmarena.com/sony_is_re...mx903_and_imx907_image_sensors-news-59300.php, the IMX903 is allegedly a 1/1.14” sensor with 48MP resolution and 1.4µm pixels (though it does align as the 16 Pro can do "Wide Dynamic Range tech courtesy of Dolby and will be able to capture 4K video at high frame rates")

Anyone in this industry can shed some light on what's going on? Are the sources/teardown wrong? so it's either

  1. a variant of IMX803(with double readout speeds supporting 4K120)
  2. a variant of IMX903 with same aperture/sensor size as the IMX803 (is this even possible)

One thing is for sure: if Apple uses a bigger sensor, they can't shut up about it. They are highlighting this spec point since the iPhone 4. Even more so with the latest more photo centric releases.
So I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say the sensor size has not been changed.

It would sound worse if Apple announces that the new main camera captures 17% more light or whatever the percentage is. Most people would see that as something not good because they would think in their mind that the camera is only 17% better than the one they have from the 14/15 pros
😂 so to the masses it would sound like a minor improvement because they don’t know how cameras work.

Rest assured they would at least say "now, with an even larger sensor"

As if sensor size means anything behind a cropped frame.

Remember the full frame DSLR vs cropped ?
What do you mean behind a cropped frame? In general sensor size still matters a lot. On smartphones and on cameras as well. Altough what really matters is the overall light gathering, therefore sensor size and f stop. No to mention the general improvements of newer sensors, like speed, etc.
