I was under the impression that Blu-Ray was still a way off and I believe Toshiba has only just officially launched its HDDVD player today?

I did a quick google search and found these:

What gives?

Blu Ray's been out for quite a while. Not that long in laptops but still it's not ultra-new.

A Samsung stand-alone BD player you connect to a TV runs about $1600 here. Haven't even seen a HD-DVD player, let alone HD-DVD movies but I've seen a bunch of Blu Ray movies.

Personally I'm not climbing on board either. Stuff 'em, let the buggers stew in their proprietary mess until they can agree on a standard.

There probably won't be ONE standard this generation. The real winner will be the first manufacturer to come out with a player/drive that reads (and writes, eventually) both formats.

Do you know if anyone is actually working on that yet?

I got a blue-ray writer that i hooked up to one of the PC's in my LAN. It worked fine and did everything that is expected from it but at 1x its way to slow for backing up just yet.
