Don't forget there's an XM6 that's superior (and not on sale). I almost pulled the trigger on the XM5 until realizing this.

XM5s are $250 at Best Buy with membership

Yep, the XM6 are great, I got them for my last long haul plane flight. Biggest feature they brought back from the XM4 is the foldable headband. Makes them much more portable.

I have the XM4 headphones. Noise cancelling is terrific! Especially on flights. Jet engine noise is all but GONE, and allows me to listen to music at comfortable levels. I hear the XM5 may be even better. But there's this: the XM4s folt flat and fit in a small case for easy travel packing. The XM5s do not. There were complaints about it, and Sony restored the fold-flat design in the XM6s.

But I'm so happy with the 4s I have no inclination to upgrade. did I mention that the battery lasts longer than any other rechargeable device I own? WAY longer! and they don't lose their charge when they're turned off like most Apple products!

The funny thing is they were trying to copy Apple APM at the time even though their existing solution was better 🤣

Does Sony still make the old headphones and people still buy them? The XM4 was $130 at Target a year ago, the XM5 was $200 (with a $30 Apple GC) at Costco; I know there are no time machines but still, I thought everyone who wanted one already got theirs.

No, it was based on focus group discussions and research and what the small group liked the masses did not.

Is the XM5 a worthy upgrade from AirPods Max? I already own the APM. If I didn't, I know the XM5 is better. But better by enough?

Believe what you want. Sony have decades of experience with headphone designs which were generally similar. The APM were released and the Sony design was changed to look similar with pointlessly round bits, no ability to fold down and a bigger case.
Perhaps it was a focus group full of MacRumors most rabid Apple fanbois. Sony should have known better and stuck to their great design.
