Some new rumors have surfaced regarding the Sony Xperia Z3 from Twitter tipster @DooMLoRD_XDA. The latest bits of news appear to confirm some earlier reports, contradict some, and add in some new bits of information. According to the latest information, the Xperia Z3 will be released in September. That is consistent with statements made by Sony earlier this year indicating they thought flagship devices need to be released more often than once a year. Sonys Kurozumi Yoshiro also said at MWC 2014 that Sony was going to go in a new design direction which @DooMLoRD_XDA seems to confirm by indicating the Xperia Z3 will have a new design with slim bezels and will be only 7 mm thick.
On the downside, it appears Sony will be sticking with the Snapdragon 801 processor instead of upgrading to the 805. This probably means Sony will not be jumping on the quad HD bandwagon quite yet with the Xperia Z3.
Fans of large smartphones may be disappointed to learn that Sony also appears to be abandoning the Z Ultra version and will instead pursue development of a 7 or 8-inch tablet. Meanwhile, Sony may be following the path of other manufacturers and will produce a smaller, less powerful version of the flagship. In their case, they may refer to is as a compact model which will come with a 4.6-inch 720p screen and even thinner bezels than the Xperia Z3.
If Sony hits the market in September, they will likely be competing against Apples latest iteration of the iPhone as well as some mid-cycle updates of flagship devices from manufacturers like HTC or Samsungs Note 4. Despite producing generally well-received devices, Sony still remains largely non-existent in the U.S. market. With all of the changes that appear to be on the way with the Xperia Z line, perhaps the company is ready to make a major push starting this fall.
